Dealing with Pregnancy Aches and Pains

As a first time mom to be – it seemed that my body was changing before my very eyes. It is the changes on the outside that we notice most but those changes on the inside that will cause those aches and pains that come with pregnancy. Nine months is a very short time for the vast changes that occur in the body to prepare it for the birth of a child.

Although morning sickness isn’t considered to a traditional ache and pain – it affected me like many other young pregnant mums. I affectionately referred to it as ‘morning, afternoon and evening sickness.’ It seemed to come in the morning, cause me to be nauseous all day and wreak havoc with my body until the early evening.

Morning sickness is caused by increased level of progesterone in the mothers system. This increased hormone causes slowing of intestinal muscles and can last well into the second trimester of the pregnancy. Although morning sickness subsides it can take the better part out of your day. It is important to maintain high levels of fluid, be well rested and eat healthy.

Upon recommendation from pregnant friends and other young mums there were a few things that helped me to deal with the sickness. As hard it was to exercise – I found that a daily walked helped ease the nausea. It may have been the fresh air but I felt overall improvement while keeping active. Ensuring that I was drinking enough water was also essential. I learned that some foods would make the nausea worse – and some would cause it to subside. These foods are going to be different for everyone but foods high in fibre, calcium and low in acid seemed to work for me.

Back Pain

Back pain during pregnancy is quite common. The sacroiliac joint may malfunction causing pain to appear during pregnancy. Many ligaments must grow and stretch while preparing for birth - but the good news that is that the pain often subsides after delivery of the baby. These preparations are essential and are found not only in the pelvis but in the rest of the body.

As one of the most common pregnancy woes there are many things that you can do to alleviate the back pain. Sleeping on your side or with a pillow between the knees can assist with the pressure. I was so used to this pillow that I find it uncomfortable to sleep without one now! The pillow helps to maintain straight lines throughout the spine creating good posture – even while you sleep. Good posture and exercises are an essential way of maintaining back health during pregnancy.

Many mothers to be forget about their skin. During the nine months of pregnancy skin is one often one of the most noticeably changing organisms. Stretching skin may be soothed with cocoa butter – and many other rich moisturizers. Soothing the skin will also deter the development of stretch marks and create versatile skin that will become tight, moisturized and healthy skin long after the delivery.

During the first months of pregnancy the aches and pains may be memorable. Once you are into the last trimester the aches and pains are merely signs of a changing body. These changes will result in a child – and an unbreakable bond, as it has been these changes that have created this bundle of joy.
